Now that I'm out of school I'm able to have the time to finally try my hands on building one. I have made plans for a marionette which has quite a simple structure.... but the puppet I want to try my hands on first is the cable style. I enjoy fantasy and have a plan for a woodbaby puppet... but unfortunately don't know how the cable system is built for the movement. Woodbaby puppet just slightly move so it seems like an easy enough structure to build... but I need some idea of how the mechanics just. It isn't like the marionette with an exterior movement system... haha so I can't really tell how they work by just looking at them.

So if anyone knows how to build, where to find, or has a pattern for the cable system for the woodbaby puppets... I would highly appreciate it. I've emailed actually woodbaby makers but due to it being something they make for profit, I may not receive an answer. But this isn't for competitive mean haha. Really I have always wanted one and it would be cool to make one. I like renaissance fairs so it would be a great piece for my costume or a gift for a friend. I'm an illustrator so making it a living would probably interfere with that.

Anyone have experience building or performing toy theatre? The desire to delve into this form of puppetry has been growing since last year, when I caught an extraordinary evening's performance by Great Small Works www.greatsmallworks.org and thought that it would be a perfect addition to my own troupe's bag of tricks.

We were offered site specific gig, for which adding a toy theatre would be ideal. So, I have to stop dreaming and start building. The plan is to build it inside of a suitcase for convenience of transportation.

So far the only book on the practical aspects of toy theatre that I have found is "Theatre on a Tabletop: Puppetry for Small Spaces" by Kuang-Yu Fong & Stephen Kaplin. Anyone have suggestions? Ideas?

P.S. For those of you unfamliar with toy theatre, it was a popular home entertainment of the 19th century: essentially a cardboard replica of a proscenium theatre that would sit in the parlor. A family would amuse itself by staging popular plays of the day using cardboard cutouts.

Why do puppeteers hold puppery in such contempt?

I just participated in a puppet event targeted at adults. The venue was 21 and older. There were about 11 or 12 acts per night for three nights.

Of these 11 or 12 acts--2 were marionette acts, 2 were shadow puppet shows, 1 had Bunraku style puppetry and 1 was a hand and rod puppet act. the other half of the show had little or no connection to puppetry. The worst thing was that out of all these acts, maybe three had any intention of using puppetry as a serious art form. The entire rest of the show seemed to comprise of vomit and dick jokes. Most of the puppets were not well crafted and there was little care taken in the writing of each act.

Now let me be clear. I am NOT opposed to vomit or dick jokes, as long as they are carefully conceived and forward the interest of puppetry in general. There is nothing wrong with well done bawdy humor. BUT, what I mostly saw was not carefully crafted innuendo or iconoclastic challenges to the status quo, but a crutch that puppeteers used because they didn't have the cajones to be creative.

I see this as the biggest problem facing American puppetry. There are two broad categories that seem to dominate the field.

*shows targeted at children (and many of these are excellent)
*shows targeted at adults which focus on being revolting, dirty, shameless and lewd (which are done as poorly as possible)

All I am saying is there is more to puppetry than these two categories. There are a lot of very talented puppeteers out there doing beautiful, heartfelt shows with great characters and stories. Or at least pushing the envelope of clever performance with ingenuity and skill. I am not speaking to you who are trying so hard to make American puppetry the best it can be, I'm speaking to you who seem to think being a puppeteer is a silly, throw away lark. A way to get a reaction out of an audience without putting in the real effort. Those who see the limits of puppetry instead of the avenues for exploration. Those who have so much contempt for puppetry that the form is only worth debasing so that the use of puppets becomes a joke in and of itself.

What I'm asking is that each of us look at what we are doing with our puppetry and ask ourselves, "Am I making the best show I can?" and "Am I forwarding the art of puppetry or am I tearing it down?"

"Can I do Better?"

I for one, will try.

This time, Karagoz is a gay Syrian, who first flees from Syria after being imprisioned for being gay, then from Israel where he they don't like him for being a Syrian who tunnels under the border, then naively falls in with al-Qaeda, et cetera-- with stops at Ellis Island, a Guantanamo bay, and a "gay-recovery" program.

Bloody hilarious and utterly vulgar.

Zaloom also stepped out from behind his shadow screen to perform autobiographical monologues as interludes. With even more hilarious results.

After the show, he was nice enough to invite people on stage so he could show them how his puppets worked.

Unfortunately, he is unlikely to produce a video of the show anytime soon due to the fact that "Beakman's World" is on TV again-- and that might cause problems.

I belong to a theater company called ArcheDream based out of Philadelphia. We make ourselves look like puppets. Or so the audience says anyway. The characters are archytypes of human emotions or symbols. You can check it out on www.archedream.com We're also a very young Tribe if you feel titilated enough by what you see to join. The masks and costumes are hand painted and made by myself and my art director Alan Bell.
At the moment we are creating a children's animal show with Monkey's in the Moonlight, animals on stilts, butterflies and jellyfish etc. We've never constructed costumes like this and are currently in need of some literature for making puppet like extentions of the body. Anybody have any suggestions for places I can look for information on how to build?
Thanks for all you conceptualizers that dig on your imagination and bring it right on into fruition. It's all tasty and decadant.....yummmm;o}

Hey Y'all,

My crew is throwing a party this Friday and it's puppet themed. We'd love to have one or two performances/large scale puppets involved. Small stipend, great vibe. See below. We've done six of these parties in 2005 so far, had more than 300 people come to the last one and didn't end til 10AM. Note that this party is scheduled to be outside, guerilla style. No permits.

Please tribe me and tell me what you've got in mind and what sort of experience you have.

Cheers,

Alx

OK Kidz,

Y'all want to know what we've been up to, right? You want to know why it's been 3 months
since our last party, right? Here's why: puppets.

This time around, on Friday, December 2nd, DownLow presents the first ever puppet
themed guerilla breaks party to raise money to convert a bus to biodiesel!

Puppets? Did I really just say puppets? Yes, I did. We have three options for your puppet
pleasure:

1) BYOP. Do you have a really cool puppet? Have you been dying to take it to a party but
just been ashamed of how it would appear? Well we're happy to present you with a
solution. Large, small, it don't matter. Just bring it.

2) MYOP. Our good friends Robin and Jen will be running a Make Your Own Puppet area.
Come empty handed and leave with a handy new handsome handmade friend for your
hand. We'll have a little stage set up for improvisational (or not if you start planning now)
puppet theater. All this will take place in our second area. You see, we're expanding. In
addition to the bus and the dancefloor you're used to we will have carpet and chill DJs set
apart from the rest of the party.

3) WOP. Or just sit back and Watch Our Puppets.

Now, don't worry, we're still bringing the beats, the bus and the bass:

*Kemek (FiberlineAudio.com, KWS Records). We're very excited to be bringing Kemek back
for his first DJ appearance in at least a year. Rest assured he's been busy in the studio and
has numerous new tracks to drop on you.
*Hypnotech (Addictech.com). Definitely been making waves with his skills and selection.
*Lux (aka Rodman). Nuff said. Those who know, know.
*DownLow residents Piotron and Alxndr.
--Sound by pUrEvil--

And in the Puppet Area:
*Dr. Toast
*Piotron (DownLow)
*Pathos (Worker.com, BPM Records)

-Matt and Lindsay will be running our bar on the Camo bus with a wide assortment of
beverages for sale.
-Now that it's getting cold again outside we will see the return of the heat lamps --
DownLow cares about keeping you warm on and off the dance floor.
-Free water. Fresh fruit and doughnuts at sunrise!

We will be asking for a 5-10 dollar donation with half of all donations going to a special
fund to convert the camo bus to run on BIODIESEL! No one will be turned away for lack of
funds but we really encourage you to give. Know that you'll be bringing Jens Peter one
huge step closer to converting the bus.

Please listen to the entire voicemail on the day of the party and cooperate with all
requests: 415-820-3954. We are also actively looking for a backup, indoor spot in case of
rain. If anyone knows of a cool space please be in touch.

Thanks for your support!!

Hi, I am looking for a person who wants to work with a Punch man as a bottler. The bottler is the person who stands out front of the stage and interacts with the puppets and provides sound effects an well as other stuff.Keeps the show going and keeps me from getting ripped off while I am in the puppet stage.

This is a great learning opportunity if you always wanted to play the streets but were to shy to ask how. If you already have an act, lets see if we could partner up. I can play either a #1 or #2. We will work on the show this winter and tour this summer.

I play guitar, mandolin, upright bass, celtic harp, and sing. I also juggle, eat fire, stilt walk, rolling globe, magic, glass walk and all that side show stuff, I also have San Francisco's only Flea Circus, Cirque de Fleas

I have done alot of shows around the US for years as a solo, but, took a break to study puppetry for the last two years. I am now looking to partner up with some one with alot lot of skills already or intense enthusiasm to learn or hopefully both. Hope to hear from a willing candidate soon. til then have a great big beautiful incredibly wonderful super spectacular day. Glenn

I am sort of new to puppetteering, but have had some good gigs so far. I've performed at Children's Fairyland, worked a pilot for a children's show, and am currently the voice and animation for the puppet lead singer of Bunny Numpkins and the Kill Blow-up Reaction (check us out at the Starry Plough Oct. 29th).

I am looking for more involvement in the puppet arena! I'd love to do any kind of puppet shows, 'specially upbeat and funny ones. I'd also love to do some fundraising for Katrina.

Any one interested, or have any advice for me?
