Re: I WANT TO MAKE PUPPETS......
Wed, January 23, 2008 - 6:02 PMGOOD FOR YOU!
Always good to have new people making puppets. I guess the first question is what kind of puppets do you want to make? Maybe I should say, what skill level do you want to start at? My perception is that it's fairly easy to get into making shadow puppets with minimal materials and prior knowledge while hand carved marionettes would have a much higher cost associated with materials and may take the longest time to master. Hand and rod puppets would fall somewhere in between.
I don't know much about classes in the Bay Area but I can recommend a few books. I think most puppeteers are at least partly self taught. A great introductory book to marionette building is "Marionettes, how to make and work them" by Helen Fling. A great book on hand puppets and "muppet" style puppets is "The complete book of Puppets and Puppeteering" by Robert Ten Eyck Hanford.
Good lucck and welcome to the world of puppets! -

Re: I WANT TO MAKE PUPPETS......
Wed, January 23, 2008 - 9:41 PMHonestly, you can turn anything into a puppet from my experience.. .. it's about giving it life & character... You can make a stuffed animal look like it's breathing (fun to do with the realistic looking ones & around unsuspecting people). sock puppets & shadow puppets are easy ways to get into puppetry..
Have fun & post your puppets!:)

Re: I WANT TO MAKE PUPPETS......
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 12:00 PMI like to keep a collection of different kinds of puppet eyes around... its amazing what will come alive, just by sticking eyes on it... You can keep people entertained for hours with an old shoe, as long as it seems to be looking at them...
I make all my puppets from recycled or found materials, packing foam, old leather, driftwood, lichen from the woods... materials don't have to be expensive to be magical... there is powerful alchemy in recycling... turning lead into gold...
one great way to get some puppeteering lessons, is to go check out a puppet show, meet the performers, and then offer to fund a project or host a workshop space... this is sure to get some attention...
love light laughter and song

Mon, May 26, 2008 - 10:54 AMI second the: found items + eyes= fun
I also agree on the "how to learn" thing here by Myrth :) -
my friend sent me an artical from a local paper- on some puppeters- i looked for them on myspace, wrote them an e-mail, and now all the puppets live with me and I get to work on them... but it wasn't until i went with a few on my own that i got brave enough and found my voice and courage to do it myself. (till then i was behind the scenes for like a year) - i'm still not great- but damn its fun!
Go look some folks up on Myspace (I hate the space but i do love that its good to find performers on) and search out a local college campus for it/ theater group/ etc. i'm SURE there are some folks doing it in your area!
Personally, i think our puppets are the bomb- but there is another group that has crappy little hand puppets but AMAZING comedy. sometimes, its not your equipment that gets you seen... use your imagination.
